GENETICS OF THE WEEK: SKUNK

This week, Cannadaily will talk to you about the legendary genetics: Skunk. Today the original strain is one of the most famous genetics in the world. Both growers and consumers appreciate it for its productivity and its distinctive aroma.

The origins of Skunk genetics:

The history of Skunk begins in California in the early 1970s. Sam the Skunkman, member of the Sacred Seeds, one of the largest Californian marijuana collectives, was having fun with a few colleagues crossing hybrids of Sativa Columbian Gold and Acapulco Gold with a pure indica Afghani. All the crops were cultivated outside back in the time, the goal was then to select plants on the basis of their resistance and productivity.

The discovery of the Skunk strain turned the cannabis world upside down. And there are good reasons for it. The genetics is reliable, stable, early flowering, nice yield, and has a delicious aroma. The Californian ganja quickly got imported in Europe, and especially in the Netherlands where Sam the Skunkman decided to move.

Since the 1970s, several varieties of Skunk have spread around the world. In fact, the Skunk is by far one of the most widely used genetics to create new hybrids. The majority of these variations are still true to the original, predominantly Sativa. There are also indica-dominant variants from a skunk hybrid created by the Australian-born Neville Shoenmakers.

Most famous varieties of Skunk:

  • Super Skunk

One of the oldest varieties. The strain Super Skunk is famous for its very early flowering of less than 2 months and its high productivity. It is a 75% sativa and 25% indica hybrid. It is recommended as an analgesic but also as a stimulant for artists.

  • Super Silver Haze

One of the queens of Dutch coffeeshops. A strain that comes from Skunk and Northern Lights with a Haze. The mix gives us a multicolored sativa and is considered to be the best Haze hybrid. This strain offers strong psychedelic effects due to its strong sativa side, 21% THC.

  • Orange bud

A famous and award-winning variety. It appeared in the 80s, is sativa dominant and has hilarious highs. Its flavour fruity, with citrus notes. It’s a strain that pushes us towards creativity and energy.
