Ukraine, another nation on the way to legalizing cannabis

Last October, during local elections, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky launched a poll in which 65% voted in favor of the legalization of cannabis as a treatment for serious diseases with difficult cure.

Although the poll was an initiative led by the president himself, it had no legal implications. The use of cannabis for medical purposes is still illegal in the country, unlike heavier drugs from the opium group such as morphine and tramadol.

However, it seems that never before has there been greater support for legalizing medical cannabis in the country, the very fact that the president organized the aforementioned survey is proof of this. Both the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada, the Supreme Council of Ukraine, government ministers and even the patriarch of the country’s Orthodox Church, Epifanio, support the proposal made by Zelensky.

Many other voices of public opinion in the country have expressed their support for the motion. Like the renowned television presenter and media star, Yanina Sokolova. Who after suffering breast cancer and undergoing chemotherapy treatment, openly declared that medical cannabis had helped her alleviate the pain when it became unbearable. Sofiika, a young Kiev patient suffering from drug-resistant epilepsy, is also waiting for the legalization of medical marijuana. She just wants to be able to access effective treatment for her disease.

The Holos (Voice) party decided to dedicate the bill on the legalization of cannabis, which was registered in the Verkhovna Rada at the end of December, giving it an alternative name “Law for Sofiika”. She has been chosen as the standard bearer for more than two million seriously ill anonymous Ukrainian patients who impatiently await further advances in bureaucratic red tape that will allow them to finally bring relief to their ills. Yes, she can!
