Mexico passes ‘Medical Use’ cannabis law, for business

In a country with a long history of problems directly or indirectly related to drugs, it has been a long time coming for the government to take back some control of the market and level the playing field.

Having said that in any country that has regulated or even legalized cannabis or any drug for that matter, there has been and always will be a thriving black market.

In order for Mexico to turn the tide in its struggle with the cartels, they are going to have to take an approach not yet tried and tested….or is it?

When the Netherlands decriminalized the use and possession of Heroin (a pretty hardcore move for a hardcore drug) and treated the addicts like patients instead of criminals they saw a 500% decrease in heroin deaths, use, and crime.

Very interesting figures for an area of the drug world cloaked so heavily in grim darkness and misunderstanding, the same can be said for the drug world in Mexico but will the law reform change the paradigm?

Mexico very recently passed laws allowing medical cannabis research companies to obtain licenses to grow and study cannabis.

“(The regulation) is not aimed at patients growing their own cannabis, it is aimed at pharmaceutical companies producing pharmaceutical derivatives of cannabis which are classified as controlled substances that need a prescription,” which seems typical of governments trying to line their pockets before anything with or without sense can be approved.

On the recreational use, the government is in the final stages (has been since 2017) of creating and writing the rules and regulations to allow the populace to grow and smoke their own herb.

It is believed this law will be passed in the next period of congress.

What happens if Mexico passes these laws?

It will become the biggest legal and perhaps medical market of Latin America overnight.

Could become the weed capital of the world, with its beautiful beaches, fairly priced food, and open borders this could very well be the new Amsterdam of the west.

This would be a welcomed change, the legislation marks a major shift in a country once-troubled for years by violence between feuding drug cartels, which have long made millions of dollars growing marijuana illegally and smuggling it into the United States.
