Cannadaily continues with its weekly series “ Genetics of the week”. Ladies and gentleman, let us introduce you to the strain… WHITE WIDOW!
White Widow is one of the most well known cannabis strains in the world due to its countless awards.
What are the origins of the White Widow?
As most successful commercialized cannabis strains on the market today, the history of the White Widow is conflicted.
The plant was born in 1994. The strain quickly earned numerous awards including the first prize of the 1995 High Times Cannabis Cup. Its success started a war between breeders who all stated to be the original inventor of the strain. One one hand, some believe that the White Widow was discovered by a man named Ingemar, while others take the side of another breeder known as Shantibaba, former co-owner of Greenhouse Seeds and current founder of The Mr Nice Seedbank.
It seems that the White Widow was released for the first time by Shantibaba, shortly after the foundation of the Green House Seed Company in 1994.
The White Widow strain is a sativa-indica hybrid made of a pure Brazilin sativa mother and a South Indian Keralan hybrid father. The origins of the mother plant remains a mystery though some argue that it could come from the Mango Rosa variety. The father on the other hand was discovered during a trip to India where Shantibaba visited an indica hybrid cannabis farm in the mountains of Kerala. Shantibaba told that he left the Netherlands with a batch of fresh seeds which he eventually bred with the Brazilian Sativa mother. The incredible White Widow was born.
