Ireland Medical Cannabis

Ireland takes a decisive step with the Medical Cannabis Program

The health minister announced that they will launch the financing and implementation of the project to prescribe cannabis-based drugs to patients with certain medical conditions.

The emerald island is once again in the news in our news section as it continues with its plans to legalize medical cannabis by passing new measures that will be included in the regulations enacted in 2019.

In April last year, Stpehen Donelly, already announced the start of a delivery service to prevent its citizens from traveling to the Netherlands in search of their prescriptions. And they have not stopped here.

Access to Medical Cannabis Program:

The Irish government announced at the end of January that it will allocate an additional budget for the Health Services Plan of 4,000 million euros to the medicinal program that will allow doctors to prescribe cannabinoid treatments.

As published in a press release, the conditions that can be treated with these substances are: multiple sclerosis, intractable nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and cases of severe refractory epilepsy.

The main purpose is to facilitate access to an alternative treatment for diseases or cases that conventional treatment does not work and does not present another possible cure. This has been the path traced by the experts of the HPRA (Health Products Regulatory Authority) in their report Cannabis for medical use: a scientific review.

New prospects for the Irish market:

In the first stage of the program, potential suppliers requested that their products be evaluated for their suitability for medical use and four of them have been accepted by the HPRA.

Currently, they continue to evaluate more products, which, added to the purchase of Jazz Pharmaceuticals, we see how a fairly defined strategy is being drawn for the Irish pharmaceutical industry aimed at the new green gold.

Cannabis products look set to become one of the post-covid star products; in the United States it is already allowed in some places even its recreational use as an Aldous Huxley soma… Has it come to stay?
