Why Legalized weed (Finally) Has a Chance in New York

The legalization of marijuana in New York is most likely in the cards for 2021. Given the financial woes spurred by the pandemic. Cannabis could finally become legal in New York, and the chances of that happening are higher than ever.

Not only is the state strapped for cash, but most states bordering New York have now either legalized the Plant. Both Vermont and Massachusetts already have legal weed and New Jersey is set to create its own program in the coming months. That’s left New York behind on the issue. New York is trying very hard to gather back some revenue. After not just the city but the entire nation has faced a huge economic backlash from the situation we have faced in 2020.

One age-old way of raising revenue, of course, is taxes. Many in Albany — including a rising number of progressives — want the state to raise taxes on the wealthy. Thus, they have been proposed a wide variety of those, including those targeting billionaires, corporations and capital gains.

The same holds true for mobile sports betting, which Mr. Cuomo proposed as a revenue-raiser on Wednesday. As well NY could draw some money back from gamblers, who are currently going to New Jersey, where such betting is already legal.

So this gives Big Apple residents new hope that even for sheer financial gain, 2021 might have something green in store for them that was long overdue.
