Uruguay and Canada, the First Ones.

Uruguay, revolutionary country

Uruguay, this beautiful country has not only been recognized for being the first country in the world to legalize cannabis.

But it was also the first to impose the female vote, to normalize homosexual marriage, to have a free decision on abortion, to establish a maximum working hours eight hours a day and the one that just a hundred years ago legalized marital separation due to the request by most women.

The implementation of the law regulating the use of cannabis took several years to catch up. In 2013, Uruguay already had several systems in which cannabis use can be legally accessed.

Cannabis law in Uruguay

Starting with the first point, the citizen has the right to request cannabis from the Uruguayan state.

Therefore, it is transferred to the citizen who requires it, the state did it very simply. Since there are two private companies that grow it, there it goes directly to any pharmacy to sell it as medicine. This method only favors people with a Uruguayan passport. And foreigners are not allowed to buy in pharmacies, for now.

At the beginning of this new modality, there were not a large number of pharmacies where marijuana was allowed to be sold. The fact that they were always in stock, and had no cannabis left overnight caused a massive increase to a total of 13,000 pharmacies authorized to sell cannabis. Apparently the sale of cannabis in pharmacies was working very well.

It was a good way to break once again the stereotype of who smokes marijuana and who doesn’t. However, the law of its neighboring country, Chile.

They allows smoking, but criminalizes the cultivation and purchase of cannabis. Which requires that the criminalization not end. That is exactly what Uruguay was trying to reverse, by legally regulating the ways to distribute marijuana.

Uruguay was the first country to achieve legality. Thanks to the activists and constant movements in the fight to normalize and legalize cannabis.

It seems that they spoke so loudly that those at the top could hear them.

Canada, the second green and free country

On the other hand, do you think Canada made itself heard in the same way as Uruguay?

Well, today Canada is the second country to legalize marijuana for recreational use.

In 2018, dozens of stores across the country were regulated by Canadian health authorities to legally sell marijuana to people minimum ages of 18 or 19, depending on the province. The Government implemented a sale price of about 10 Canadian dollars (about 6.7 euros) per gram of marijuana so that the cost of legal cannabis is competitive with that of the black market.

Not only that, hey have also created the public company Cannabis NB, which markets marijuana in physical stores and online. Cannabis NB has a catalog of more than 70 products and on its website it offers information on how to properly roll a joint or how to store cannabis to maintain its freshness.

This is not the only legal way to consume cannabis in Canada, citizens can also grow 4 plants per person and possess up to 30 grams of legal marijuana, its use is also allowed in public spaces and they can also share up to 30 grams of legal marijuana between other adults.

Do you think that with the new regulations imposed by the UN, will we be able to achieve legalization and live freely like Uruguay and Canada? What is the situation in your country?
