Isle of Man Cannabis

Isle of Man, a small cannabis powerhouse

Isle of Man has created new regulations that allow the production, distribution and export of cannabis. The island is located in strategic territory, between Ireland and the United Kingdom. It is not part of the European Union, it has an independent and totally autonomous government, which is why it has been able to create these cannabis laws freely.

The High Court of Tynwald, the Isle of Man parliament, unanimously approved the bill, which allows licensed individuals or companies to produce cannabis-based products, including for medical purposes.

Even so, the new regulations have not changed in terms of consumption, the use of cannabis remains illegal on the island.

Cannabis, synonymous with profit

Member of the House of Keys for Ramsey, Tynwald, LibVan party; Lawrie Hooper said the new industry could be a “key contributor to the post-pandemic Isle of Man economic recovery.”

The government has estimated that regulated cannabis production could contribute up to £ 3 million a year to the Isle of Man treasury, in addition to generating around 250 jobs. These figures are estimated for the beginning of the project, but it is expected that they can become much higher when it is already underway at one hundred percent.

Alex Allinson MHK said that the new rules “had been a long time coming” and that they should “lead to further progression in terms of drug policy.” Perhaps he is referring to the pending issue of the use and discrimination of a profit-only plant.

Already during 2019 a public survey was carried out where 95% of those surveyed were in favor of the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes on the island. In other words, apart from exporting and generating economic benefits, the Isle of Man will be able to supply itself with cannabis with its own industry.

Thus, another example of a fully sustainable industrial cannabis system.
