Covid-19 and Cannabis

Can Cannabis cure COVID-19?

New evidence is adding support to the theory that cannabis-derived CBD may help those suffering from the severe lung inflammation that occurs in more serious cases of COVID-19.

The study from researchers at Augusta University in Georgia suggests that CBD may positively impact ARDS or acute respiratory distress syndrome. A dangerous symptom in COVID-19 caused by an overactive inflammatory response”. Other than supportive measures, there is no definitive cure for ARDS. Illustrating the urgent need for creative and effective therapeutic modalities to treat this complex condition.'”

Another Canadian researcher indicates that certain strains of cannabis could block the effects of coronavirus on the human body. But there is still not enough evidence to give the green light to marijuana use under the excuse of covid.

What the Studies Say

The same scientists have been tasked with analyzing 400 strains of sativa cannabis. And so determine if the plant has any effect on the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Dr. Kovalchuk’s research led him to focus his analysis on a dozen strains that have produced promising results in reducing the effects of COVID-19 on the body.

“Some of these have reduced the number of [virus] receptors by 73 percent, the chance of involvement is much lower,” Dr. Kovalchuk said. “If they can reduce the number of receptors, they are less likely to become infected.” No peer reviewed studies to date show that cannabis or its compounds can help with COVID-19 specifically. But the authors of this article say the evidence suggesting that it may help is worth further investigation.

They recommend that scientists begin studies to investigate. Whether CBD can be used to reduce inflammation and anxiety in COVID-19 cases, as an adjunct to antiviral medications. While this doesn’t suggest cannabis should be considered a cure or treatment of COVID-19 on its own. Actually it does suggest that it may have potential to help bring down inflammation and reduce anxiety in those suffering from the disease.
