United States: Estimates predict 57 to 72 billion cannabis sales by 2030.

According to calculations from the American firm New Frontier Data, published in a recent report, American citizens will buy $57 billion worth of cannabis in 2030. Currently, sales stand at $32 billion a year.

18 states are on the way to legalizing cannabis.

According to the report, sales could rise to 72 billion if the 18 states that have started the legalization process legalize cannabis. The American cabinet explained that this growth is linked to a “normalization” and a “recognition of the therapeutic and well-being virtues of the plant by society” even though the United States has still not legalized cannabis at the federal level.

“The seismic shift in public perception around cannabis is fueled in part by the growing exposure that Americans have through legal, regulated markets,” said Gary Allen, New Frontier Data’s CEO. “Even in the absence of a federal framework, the resilience and growth potential of a determined industry is laying the foundation for a safe and sustainable consumer category,” he added. Currently, one in three US citizens has access to legal cannabis.

From 47 million to 71 million consumers by 2030.

The New Frontier firm believes that with the democratization of cannabis, the number of consumers will naturally increase. Estimates for 2020 showed 47 million consumers, a figure which should increase to 71 million by 2030. However, these figures should be nuanced since the firm considers that a consumer is a person who uses cannabis at least once a year. Finally, “five out of the ten states with the highest number of users are still years away from legalizing recreational cannabis.”

These incredible figures can be explained by the fact that the firm tried to estimate growth through the existing and potential markets. The legalization of cannabis presents many uncertainties and can sometimes take years to be put in place. That is the case in Kentucky, which passed a law to authorize medical cannabis a few days ago but ultimately decided not to legalize it before 2030. The report says the American medical market will continue to expand in the country, with the number of registered patients forecasted to increase to 5.7 million in 2030.

In 2022, we expect the state of New Hampshire to legalize cannabis since the government has now been working on bills for about four years. The state of Maryland began to address legalization in 2017 and should also legalize cannabis this year.
