The Catholics in Mexico against the Legalization Bill.

The Catholic Church in Mexico has condemned the approval in the Senate of an initiative to legalize the possession, cultivation and consumption of small amounts of marijuana. The measure approved on Thursday will now be turned over to the Chamber of Deputies for examination and voting.
The initiative would legalize the possession of 28 grams (one ounce) of marijuana by adults as long as they do not consume it in front of children. It would also authorize the cultivation of a maximum of six plants per person and pave the way for the establishment of a permit system for larger-scale production and sale.

The Conference of the Mexican Episcopate asked the Chamber of Deputies on Sunday “to modify the initiative so that public health and safety are privileged.” “The approved initiative does not address the damage to health arising from the increasing use of marijuana, does not address the effects on young people in families of drug users, nor does it contribute to inhibiting and reducing exposure to narcotic substances”, the CEM said in a statement

The Church pointed out that, with the approval of the initiative, “health and the common good cease to constitute a priority, and give place to the tastes of individuals even though they could cause harm to another person.
