CBD market for pets : “Who’s the good boy”

Cannabidiol also known as CBD is now entering the pet market under the form of dry food, oil and supplements. More and more vets are now prescribing legal cannabis to treat specific illnesses and disorders in animals, particularly for cats and dogs, however all mammals should be sensitive to CBD.

Worried that your cat would get high? There is no such thing. Evidence shows that CBD is where the medicinal benefits of marijuana lie while at the same time, blocks the effects of THC, the substance that gets you high. Hemp products for pets aim to enhance the benefits of CBD while minimizing the euphoria induced by THC.

Despite the very recent and little amount of medical investigations in regards of the use of cannabis for animals, pet owners seem to be pleased by the idea of healing their furry friends through more alternative natural treatments. In fact, the CBD pet products market is booming, particularly in the United States and Switzerland. The industry sees tons of small local businesses playing the profitable card of “local, natural and organic”.

CBD for animals seems to be particularly recommended to treat anxiety, artrosis, nausea, rheumatism, chronic pain etc.

The dose of CBD varies according to the size, breed, and weight of the animals usually from 2 to 10%. The prices differ drastically depending on the quality of the products.

In any case, even though the products can be found in pet stores and online, it is highly recommended not to self-prescribe but rather consult a vet before giving CBD to your pet.

The Animal Poison Control Centers are seeing an increasing number of marijuana poisoning in pets. The majority of cases are due to accidental poisonings but still, they are not riskless. Symptoms include urinary incontinence, impaired balance, high heart rate, or restlessness.

Pet clinics advise to use CBD mainly for old dogs suffering from rheumatism, artrosis and dementia to help them with pain management and soothe their mind. However, they do not recommend giving CBD with the purpose of calming a puppy or a young dog who, if healthy, naturally has lots of energy to spend.
