United States: Cannabis Candies Start A War

In the United States, traditional confectioners are at war with cannabis candy producers who rely on tempting marketing.

Cannabis candies are highly successful in the United States. Replacing the heavy space cakes of the ’70s, shops sell cannabis candies as a healthier option for users who don’t want to smoke or vape.

More and more stores are offering cannabis candies inspired by very popular classic candies. The success of the green candies started a war within sweets confectioners.

Giant candy brand belonging to the Mars group has already sued five cannabis candies for intellectual property infringement! The resemblance is sometimes obvious: same shape, same packaging except for a few details. The choice of names is just as confusing: Stoneo instead of Oreo, Cannaburst instead of Starbust.

Beyond the problem related to intellectual property, confectioners defend the argument around the safety of users. Between 2014 and 2018, calls to the Washington Poison Control Center for accidental cannabis poisoning of children under five have tripled.
