And the number one prize goes to Spain!
The truth is that it is not something that surprises us. There are several years in which statistics show us that Spain is full of stoners.
According to data from the statistics website Statista and EMCDDA, 27.2% of Europeans say they have tried it on cannabis. It seems like a low figure, but cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in all of Europe. Moreover, if we compare it with those who have tried cocaine (5.4%), MDMA (4.1%), and amphetamines (3.7%), you will see that their number is quite high.
Taking into account the last year, Spain and France, with 11% are the first on the list.
The truth is that there are many reasons in which we can explain why these results. And why Spain is consecutively the Top 1. Due to the geography, economy and Spanish culture, which is wrapped in cannabis.
GEOGRAPHY
Starting with logic, and its geographical location. Spain is a neighbor of Africa. Hence, it has been the entry point for Moroccan hashish, which makes for a good distribution network between Moroccan material to its other EU neighbors. And not just talking about cannabis. When the marijuana boom began, like the tobacco smuggling in Galicia, it created the infrastructure for the importation of cocaine.
ECONOMY
Of course geography has a lot to do with the economy. The fact that there is so much traffic between countries makes more people want to sell and make extra money, which, approximately, 7 out of 10-sell marijuana in Spain. For this reason, you have to lower the price to be competitive. In Spain, marijuana is sold at € 5 per gram on average, compared to the European average of € 15.
CULTURE
Everything is linked to the other. The location creates an abundance of marijuana in the country, marijuana is easy to obtain and cheap, that makes the consumption statistics go up, and we are always at the top of the list in the EU.
And for all these reasons, cannabis is more accepted by society and is becoming more common and mixed with culture. If you think about it, how many Spanish artists have a song dedicated to cannabis or in which it talks about it? Several artists surely came to mind.
And thanks to this integrity to marijuana, exists associations. Associations are those places where you go to buy cannabis, and smoke it to relax and socialize with other people who consume it. For many, associations are a refuge and an oasis of calm.
Giving an extra figure, around 70% of all Spanish associations are in Catalonia. Where cannabis use is higher than in the rest of the country, according to a survey by the National Drug Plan, let’s not forget that Catalonia also hosts Spannabis, the international cannabis fair.
We all know that if we want to find a good Hash to smoke, and at a good price, we will have to go to the south of Spain. Instead, we will always find more variety of marijuana and at a good price in the north.
