San Francisco Bans Tobacco in Apartments but Allows Cannabis

This is not the first time San Francisco has been in the news in recent years with regards to its laws on tobacco smoking in public places.

vaping and even the sale of flavored tobacco and flavored vaping liquid has been under fire in recent years.

in the most recent changes the board of supervisors voted 10 to 1 to ban smoking tobacco in apartments and condominiums.

Second hand smoke Kills

as research has shown that second-hand smoke is dangerous estimated at killing 480.000 people every year in the US.

the decision to allow people to smoke cannabis was a welcomed note by the pot-smoking community as the amendment was written to exempt cannabis smoke, when smokers declared it would make smoking weed in and out of their homes illegal,

giving them no choice but to break the law, the changes made it the largest city in the states to ban tobacco smoking.

The fine is huge

Rules breakers face heavy penalties and can be fined $1000USD per day but under no circumstances could someone be evicted for re-offending.

San Fran bans more smoking related stuff

The city has been under fire from residents over a previous law change that stopped shops selling flavored tobacco and vaping liquid in 2018 a move that baffled many SF residents,

some stating ‘its pointless if smoking tobacco is legal then allow us to smoke what we want’

The first US City

But again in 2020 SF became one of the first cities to ban the sale of all vaping regalia

including the ban for vaping goods bought online sent to city addresses as a result local residents opposed the bill and tried to have it overturned.

How dangerous is second-hand smoke?

The research behind second-hand tobacco smoke has been ongoing for many years and there have been many studies that have shown it can be very harmful.

but first let’s define what second-hand smoke is and how bad it can be,

according to the CDC secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers.

Secondhand smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals.

Hundreds are toxic and about 70 can cause cancer.

with that in mind it’s a smart move by SF to ban it in apartments and public places. Let’s just hope they don’t ban certain flavors of weed.
