The European Commission (EC) affirmed that, its preliminary report on cannabidiol (CBD), it is no longer considered a drug:
‘We have taken into account the opinions of different applicants, and the Court of Justice of the EU. The EC concluded that, cannabidiol should not be considered a drug , within the meaning ,of the UN convention. This means that the substance “can be classified as food,” the spokesperson said.
Why this decision
From now, on CBD will be mark as food in the European Union.
The European Union communicated the decision, and is important news for the European hemp and CBD industry. Which, is a relief for this industry. In fact, not only will CBD-based edible products no longer be prohibited in the European Union. They will also be authorized throughout the territory.
During the last years, many citizens, have submitted requests to the European Commission for authorization to use CBD, but, nowadays , their approval has been temporarily frozen.
The European Commission is now contacting the applicants, for these authorizations to inform them that “we are resuming our verification of the validity of the applications submitted,” he added.
The decision it was not easy
One of the triggers of this decision was that on November 19, the court, based in Luxembourg, issued a judgment according to which CBD cannot be considered a “narcotic” ,since European law refers to two UN texts.
the Convention on Psychotropic Substances and the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. It seems that, little by little, European and world politics are opening their eyes to cannabis, recognizing the physical and psychological benefits that the plant can bring to society.
