La compañía ha acordado recientemente la adquisición de GW, en un intento por dominar el mercado estadounidense del sector una vez el consumo recreativo sea legal.
Jazz Pharmaceuticals plc es una empresa biofarmacéutica con sede en Irlanda. Fue fundada en 2003.
Su producto más popular es el medicamento Xyrem aprobado por la FDA. La sal de sodio del neurotransmisor natural ácido γ-hidroxibutírico que es un oxibato de sodio.
Vendido bajo la marca Xyrem, entre otros, es un medicamento que se usa para tratar dos de los síntomas de la narcolepsia: debilidad muscular repentina y somnolencia diurna excesiva.
GW
GW Pharmaceuticalses una compañía farmacéutica británica conocida por su producto para el tratamiento de la esclerosis múltiple, Nabiximols.
Este medicamentol fue el primer derivado natural de la planta del cannabis en obtener la aprobación del mercado mundial.
También es líder mundial en el desarrollo de terapias con cannabinoides derivados de la planta.
Debido a sus procesos probados de investigación y desarrollo de fármacos, disfrutan de una amplia cartera de patentes registradas, además de una notable experiencia en reglamentación y fabricación.
También son los fabricantes encargados del medicamento británico Sativex®, un spray oral producido a partir de un extracto de cannabis.
Este último contiene los principales cannabinoides Delta-9-tetrahidrocannabinol (THC) y cannabidiol (CBD). Así como cannabinoides menores específicos y otros componentes no cannabinoides, utilizados para tratar la esclerosis múltiple (SRA).
Grandes nombres
Dos de las firmas más importantes del cannabis, Tilray Inc. y Aphria Inc., decidieron en diciembre fusionarse con un acuerdo valorado en unos 3.800 millones de dólares.
La mayoría de los expertos de la industria vaticinan que tanto los gigantes farmacéuticos como las empresas de bienes de consumo podrían estar más interesados en realizar adquisiciones en el sector una vez que la marihuana se legalice en todo el territorio de Estados Unidos.
En el mismo horizonte se sitúa México, mientras el país y el mundo esperan pacientemente que se dé luz verde.
