The Senate of Mexico has approved this Thursday the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana for medicinal and recreational use, whose use for these purposes will be legislated with the new Federal Law for the Regulation of Cannabis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With 82 votes in favor, 18 against and seven abstentions, the new legislative framework will regulate the cultivation, production, distribution, sale and consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This new law allows the possession of 28 grams of marijuana in people over 18 years of age, as well as between six and eight plants in a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry of health will be in charge of giving the licenses for the cultivation, production, distribution and sale of marijuana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This law seeks to “improve the living conditions” of citizens, as well as “to contribute to the reduction of the crime incidence linked to drug trafficking.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this sense, the Mexican president, Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, came to power in 2018 defending the legalization of marijuana and other drugs as a strategy to fight organized crime and trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Futhermore, organized crime, government, businessmen, police, politicians even priest are all mixed, and the violence it\u2019s still linked to the massive production of drugs on Mexico, wich affects the most precarious consumers. So this is not a win for cannabis users (yet).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
