Cannabis plants worth more than 3 million euros have been seized from a resort on the Costa Del Sol. An Irishman suspected of being part of an international drug gang has been arrested on the Costa del Sol in Spain, as part of an operation by the Spanish National Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The aim of the operation, named Pachamama, was to bypass a gang suspected of growing cannabis plants worth a total of 3.5 million euros and smuggling it into Germany for sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spanish police said the Irish suspect was arrested along with two German men, but did not give further details on his identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The operation took place in the resort town of Fuengirola near Marbella. Those two towns have quite an important irish community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was in this same region that the Irish drug cartel led by Daniel Kinahan was established before fleeing to Dubai in 2016 when the cartel declared war on the organized crime group Hutch. A war that at the time killed 18 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police said the gang was stealing electricity from several houses in the Fuengirola area – which they then used to grow their cannabis plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police arrested the individuals as they were preparing themselves to collect 15 kg of cannabis plants worth \u20ac 600,000 which they had planned to ship to Germany packed in wooden crates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police also found an additional 144 kg of cannabis, worth around 2.9 million euros, hidden in a warehouse in Fuengirola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Irish suspect will likely be in custody for at least a year before going to trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The maximum penalty for cannabis trafficking in Spain is three years.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
