CBD opportunities in the treatment of Alzheimer disease

Alzheimer’s is an irreversible, progressive, neurodegenerative disease which is the cause of 60-70% of cases of dementia. The disease affects the brain’s neurons by altering their functions and leading to their death. This provokes the slow destruction of memories and thinking skills, as well as in the most severe cases, the inability to carry out the simplest tasks.

The disease is caused by an abnormal buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the nerve cells of the brain, which impairs mental functions and causes permanent brain damage. While researching possible treatment to reduce the amount of beta-amyloid plaques, American scientists from the Dental College of Georgia in the United States have discovered that CBD has a powerful effect on the regeneration of brain functions.

In fact, the results from the experiments on mice revealed that the use of cannabidiol, a molecule derived from cannabis, could restore the function of two key proteins: TREM2 and IL-33. Those proteins participate in the ability of the brain to decrease the build-up of the beta-amyloid plaques.

According to the study, administering cannabidiol in high doses to mice once a day for two weeks enables IL-33 and TREM2 levels to be increased by 7 and 10 respectively. The researchers are in the phase of trials to determine the optimal doses of CBD for humans, inhalation being the main treatment method in order to flow the substance directly to the brain.

Who knows what could happen in a couple of years, maybe you’ll find yourself smoking a cbd doobie with your granny.
